The Elsie Cap
The Elsie Cap is a juliet cap veil, which means the veil does not simply clip to your hair — it hangs from a shaped cap that sits over the crown of your head, the way bridal headpieces were made in the 1920s and worn again through the 1970s.
The cap itself is where all the work is. Three-dimensional fabric flowers are built up across it, each one with a pearl at its centre, scattered between small beaded leaves and strands of loose pearls that fall free at the sides and swing when you move.
From the cap hangs a single layer of soft tulle, finished all the way around with a floral lace appliqué edge. The lace border is cut to the shape of the flowers, so the veil ends in petals rather than a straight hem.
Why You’ll Love It
- Shaped juliet cap that sits over the crown — not a comb clipped into the back
- Three-dimensional fabric flowers with pearl centres built across the cap
- Loose strands of pearls that hang free and move with you
- Single layer of soft tulle, light to wear
- Floral lace appliqué edging the whole border
- Cream white — warm rather than stark
Fabric and Finish
Made from polyester, with fabric flowers, pearl detailing and lace appliqué along the edge.
What a Juliet Cap Veil Actually Is
Most veils attach at one point and fall backwards, which leaves the top of your head bare. A juliet cap covers the crown instead, so the headpiece reads as part of the hairstyle rather than something added to it. It is the shape you recognise from vintage bridal portraits, and it is the reason this one works with short hair, with a blunt bob, and with hair worn completely loose — none of which suit a conventional comb veil especially well.
Vintage Without Being a Costume
The reference is clearly old, but the execution is not fussy. The cap is small, the flowers are white on white, and the only colour anywhere is the warm cream of the tulle. That restraint is what keeps it from tipping into fancy dress. Worn with a plain slip dress it reads modern and slightly strange in the best way; worn with heavy lace it reads like a family heirloom.
Where to Wear It
Registry offices and city hall ceremonies, vintage and seventies-themed weddings, small chapel services, and any elopement where you want one strong piece instead of a full look. It photographs beautifully in profile, because the pearl strands catch the light at the side of the face where a normal veil has nothing at all.
